Operation Write Home

We have a new shipper for our area for Operation Write Home, her name is Caro, and she will be at the shop on March 10, so we thought this would be a good time to ask you to get busy and make some cards for her to pick up and send to the troops. In the past we have had lots of cards, but we seem to have slacked off with our donations lately, so maybe now that the holidays are over we could get back on the bandwagon!

For those of you that are not familiar with this wonderful organization, here is a little background info:

Our Mission:

Supporting our nation's armed forces by sending blank handmade greeting cards to write home on, as well as cards of gratitude to encourage them.

This merry band of thousands of card makers is made up of Americans - and citizens of other nations too - who care about our military, and want to support them through creativity and encouragement. Crafters of all ages and levels of experience have participated since 2007...and in the spring of 2010 we passed one MILLION cards!

Care packages filled with hundreds of handmade cards are sent to our contacts, restocking every 6-8 weeks, and are sent in time for the long journey back home to loved ones. Each box is packed with great care, alternating styles, colors, and card makers from all over the USA, creating "eye candy" for heroes who see only khaki around them. The topper on each box is a plastic bag filled with 20-30 letters from adults and children across the country, letters handed out especially to those in need of a positive word from the home front.

Boxes are shipped through every week of the year, so join us anytime in sending your beautiful creations to help our heroes keep in touch with home!

There are a few guidelines to keep in mind. It looks like a long list, but most of it is really common sense:

No glitter. It's a safety hazard for our heroes, so no cards with any glitter that will flake off the card are accepted. Read more.

A2 sized cards only. 4.25" x 5.5" - half a sheet of cardstock - fit the boxes most economically. Read more.

Line cards made with dark cardstock. If a pencil won't show up, add a liner. Read more.

Limit multiples. No more than 30 for holiday seasonal cards; no more than 100 for year-round cards. Read more.

Any quantity is ok. One, a bunch, or a box full; however we need quality, not quantity. Read this note about reduced quantities now that Iraq deployments are ending.

SOME lumpiness is okay. Our heroes don't have to pay for letter mail, but that doesn't mean we can go wild with layers and embellishments. Save the big vintage buttons and thick 3D embellishments for AnyHero mail that doesn't have to go through the postal system!

DO NOT handwrite sentiments. Neither outside or inside the cards. Read more.

Use quality supplies. Computer paper, foamies, itty bitty stickers, and glue sticks don't hold up to the rigors of the battlefront. It's ok to make fewer cards with better supplies - every card counts! :) (Children's AnyHero cards are the exception; foamies are just fine for those!)

Kids must make AnyHero cards ONLY. Most children have the want-to but not the able-to when it comes to making cards that our heroes will want to write home on. Read more.

Card themes. Remember who's sending these: adults. No cards to Daddy, no "wish you were here," or party invitations; no explicit images or sentiments. See the Needs page for a list of desired themes.

Absolutely no store bought. Neither complete cards, NOR cards repurposing parts of them. It endangers our trademark.

The new Scor-Pal is here!

Yes, we have the new and improved Scor-Pal! If you have been putting off buying a Scor-Pal, you won't want to wait any longer. This is an essential tool for any paper crafter. You can make so many different card folds, envelopes, boxes, and many other projects with this one board! The Scor-Pal site has lots of creative projects with detailed instructions. This awesome tool would make a wonderful Valentine's Day gift :-)

When you place your card stock on the scoring surface, you are able to do multiple scores without moving the paper. Grid cards, accordion folds, boxes, etc. are scored in seconds.
Intelligent Groove Spacing - A perfect combination of 1/4" and 1/8" grooves as well as the usual grooves and markings for specialty cards and folds. Makes card making easy and fun!
The 6" groove has markings at the bottom of the board to accurately orient your diagonal score lines.
Like the Scor-Buddy, it a handy magnetized area for paper clips, metal brads, etc.
The top ruler markings are printed in black, much easier to read.
An envelope instruction booklet with oodles of envelope sizes is included.
The included scoring tool snaps into place at the top of the unit. It is always at hand. It has been specially designed to fit the grooves so the card stock can not be torn while scoring.
It is the same color as the Scor-Buddy, a pretty light blue.
The Scor-Mat still fits conveniently on top.

A Fabulous New Class!

You will NOT want to miss out on this class! Velvety glitter and a bunch of new techniques. These cards are gorgeous, the photos do not do them justice at all. There is so much glittery goodness here - and none of it comes off once it’s applied, it feels like velvet! And you can color over the glitter with Copic markers. How cool is that?

Using Elizabeth Crafts Peel Offs, Shimmer Sheets, and Glitter Ritz, you'll make four amazing cards. Each card will feature a unique technique, such as using Copics on highlight glitter, transferring images, masking, die cutting and layering. Glitter Ritz is a high quality micro fine glitter with an amazing shine, and it does not come off. When combined with Be Creative Tape and the "Burnished Velvet" technique you'll learn, the results are spectacular.

The class is Saturday, Feb. 4 and there will be two sessions, both with the same cards, one in the morning at 9:30am and another in the afternoon, starting at 2pm. The class fee is $23 and you need to bring small scissors, adhesive, 1/16" and 1/8" foam dots to class. The instructor is Donna Silliman from the Collins Group. Don’t wait to sign up, seats are limited. We will require payment at the time of registration for this class, to ensure that everyone gets a spot.

Hero Arts 2012 and a Winner

New Classes and the December SOTM

We have a couple of new classes for you in January! My Favorite Things is a new company to Stamper’s Alley and they have such adorable images and their Die-namics dies are really wonderful. Their cards feature the perfect combination of stamps and die cuts along with simple, but striking, coloring and design. These cards could be adapted for many different occasions just by changing the sentiment.

Flower Soft can be added to cards, scrapbook pages, and other items to add texture and color. Use Polar White for snow on holiday cards, or some pink or yellow to give flowers a soft texture. The shades of green are perfect for grass or trees. There is also Gold and Silver Metallic Flower Soft - very sparkly and shiny. If you haven’t tried Flower Soft yet, this is a good time to get a great deal on it and give it a try. You will love it!

Hero Arts and Sizzix - the products have arrived at last!

Grab a cup of coffee or tea, sit back and relax, this is going to be a looooong post. We received some Tim Holtz Alterations Texture Fades (fancy name for embossing folders) as well as the Hero Arts and Sizzix dies and folders. First, here are the Tim Holtz folders. There are some really cool ones for Christmas and Halloween/Fall!

Now on to the Hero Arts and Sizzix. These are too cool! The dies and stamps come together in the same package and the dies cut the image really closely. The are similar to the Spellbinders dies but the cutting edge is on the inside edge of the die, which makes placement over your stamped image much easier.

Just image the possibilities! In fact, here are a few possibilities from the Hero Arts website.

Now for the embossing folder and stamp combinations. You can see the results of a few of these in the cards above. They are so easy to use! You stamp the image first, slide the stamped image into the clear embossing folder, lining it up with the design on the folder, and run it through your Cuttlebug or Big Shot. Done! Check out these gorgeous designs:

No More Shims Embossing Mat

We have a brand new product in the shop! It’s the No More Shims Embossing Mat from Scor-Pal.

The Top Selling No More Shims Mat has taken embossing with the Cuttlebug and the Big Shot to a new dimension.

In addition to using it with the Spellbinders dies, you can now emboss things such as leaves, sequins, lace, and lots more ordinary household materials to make great embossed backgrounds. When putting one of your Nestabilities through, and even your Impressabilities, you will see the huge difference it makes. You can run coins and charms through and make your own embellishments by embossing them on to craft foil (up to the thickness of a quarter). You can flatten bottle caps with the mat in both the Cuttlebug and the Big Shot. You can flatten up to 6 aluminum caps at a time. All instructions included with the mat for the Cuttlebug and the Big Shot. Framelits from Hero Arts. This unique product pairing of Sizzix and Hero Arts allows crafters a quick, easy and accurate method to cut around rubber-stamped images. Each Sizzix Framelits Die Set comes packaged with its own matching cling stamp set from Hero Arts. The good news is that they are offering their stamps in cling mount as well as wood mounted, and the price is lower! So, next month (August) we will be getting the Stamp of the Month in wood mount, since it is half price with any other $10 purchase, and the rest of the stamps on the board in cling mount.

If you have never used a cling mounted stamp before, they are the same stamps that are on the wood mounts, but instead of wood they are mounted onto a cushion that clings to an acrylic block. The quality of the stamp is exactly the same, the only thing missing is wood. We would be happy to show you how they work, so please don’t hesitate to ask next time you are here.

Other companies, like DRS Designs and Impression Obsession, also offer cling mount versions of their stamps and these are less expensive that the wood mounted ones. We know that budgets are tight everywhere these days and wanted to let you know about these less expensive options, so you can keep on stampin’!

We have had a good response to our question about offering scrapbooking classes, so Denise has scheduled a scrapbooking class and the layout is adorable!

Dave Brethauer’s classes are filling up, so he has scheduled an additional Colored Pencil Class on Saturday, August 6 from 4pm – 6pm. If you are signed up for the daytime classes, you need to call or come in ASAP to pay for the classes in order to guarantee your seat in class. If you are comfortable using your own colored pencils please bring them. Be sure you have your initials or some type of identifying mark on each one so they don’t get mixed up with anyone else's pencils.

Dave will be using Prismacolor pencils for the colored pencil class and Faber Castell (Albrecht Durer series) watercolor pencils and Twinkling H20s. Also, in the watercolor class you will be using 140 lb. cold press and 140 lb. hot press papers.

Bring: Paper trimmer, scissors, and adhesive (strong double stick tape works well for the watercolor class)

Memory Box Holiday Colored Pencils

Come and learn about color, blending and shading while using Memory Box images and papers and our latest dies! Each student will make 5 cards using colored pencil techniques that will make you color like a pro. We’ll put color to work in analogous and complementary color schemes to really make your greeting cards stand out!

Memory Box Watercolor

This fun class teaches watercolor through watercolor paints and watercolor pencils. Learn the advantages of each watercolor media and get some helpful tips for applying watercolor to greeting cards. Try out different types of watercolor paper while learning washes and blending techniques. Each student will create 5 cards in an informative and supportive teaching style.

We know that some of you tried to stop by yesterday to pick up your leftovers from the Used Stamp Sale and were not happy that no one was there. In all fairness, it was our fault for not letting everyone know, but we did send out a post last week about the new hours, which were noted as starting this week.

So, we will be open Thursday and Friday – 10am – 5pm and Saturday 10am – 4pm and you may come by and pick up your check and any of your items that were left over from the sale on those days.

A Special Event Coming Up

Some of you may not be aware that Brenda’s husband, Harold, has been diagnosed with dementia and has also recently suffered a stroke. It has been hard on him, to say the least, as well as the rest of the family. Coming up on Saturday, March 26, is a special event at the Memory Lane Auto Museum, which will honor Bobby Allison and is also a benefit for Harold Elliott.

NASCAR legend, Bobby Allison, will be there along with many other drivers and racing personalities. It promises to be an exciting day for NASCAR fans and non-fans alike. A question for you

We have a seasoned scrapbooker who is interested in teaching some scrapbooking classes. She brought a sample of her work using the new Graphic 45 paper and it is beautiful! Click on the picture to see a larger image.

What we need to know is how many of you would be interested in taking some scrapbooking classes, and also which type of classes you would prefer - Scrapbooking 101, which would most likely consist of the basics of scrapbooking, i.e. how to lay out a page, mat photos, etc., or classes where you would have a layout designed for you and you would go home with an actual two page spread all ready for your photos. These would be similar to our card classes in that all supplies other than your basic kit (adhesive, ruler, etc.) would be supplied for you.

Please send me an email with your preferences and spread the word to others who may not be subscribed to our blog. We know there are scrapbookers out there who miss the Scrap Shack and we would love to have you here at Stamper’s Alley.

Stamper's Alley 12th Annual Used Stamp Sale

It's almost that time again! Time to start thinking about clearing out what you no longer need - stamps, tools, etc. - and make a little extra cash. Or just come and score some fantastic bargains.

If you would like to participate by selling your items, you must either come in to the shop and sign up, or give us a call. We need to have your initials that you plan to use on your items, so we can check it against the list of people that have already signed up. We can't allow duplicates, since this is how we keep track of who sold what. All of the information about the sale is in our instruction sheet, which can be downloaded here. The inventory sheets are available for download here.

There are a few changes from last year, which are noted in the instructions. We will no longer be providing the stickers used to label your items. Your labels need to be no smaller than 1/2" x 1" and no larger than 1" x 1", so as not to cover up too much of the image on the front of the stamps. Be sure your labels are securely attached, but also keep in mind that the person who purchases the item will want to be able to remove the sticker. Items without stickers cannot be sold and will be held for pick up after the sale. See the instruction sheet for more information.

We also ask you to bring your own bags to carry your purchases home, if you can. The reusable bags from the grocery stores are inexpensive and sturdy, perfect for carrying all of your treasures. They are environmentally friendly and can be used again and again.

You can sign up anytime, and you may start bringing your items in on April 30, but no sooner. All items for sale MUST be here no later than May 6. There are no exceptions for either of these dates. After the sale, you will be able to pick up your monies and any stamps that have not been sold starting May 10 and ALL items must be picked up by May 14. Stamper’s Alley WILL NOT be responsible for any stamps missing after the sale. If you can’t pick up your items on those dates, PLEASE make arrangements for someone else to pick them up – we do not have room to store these items.

There will be demos, door prizes, and snacks, so it promises to be a fun day! This is a very well attended event and we want everyone to have a pleasant experience. We do ask, if at all possible, please do not bring small children.
